Avoiding Legal Hassles: What School Administrators Really Need To Know. Second Edition.
Streshly, William A.; Walsh, John; Frase, Larry E.
An understanding of school law is of critical importance if one is to remain successful as a school administrator in America. This book's purpose is to provide busy school administrators with a quick source of information about the law and court decisions that shape the education playing field. It is both comprehensive and brief. Chapter 1 explains the governance of public education in this country. Chapter 2 outlines the major legal issues facing schools today. Chapters 3, 4, and 5 focus on the legal underpinnings of sound student management. Chapter 6 is devoted to the laws related to special education with an emphasis on identification, placement, and appeals processes. Advice is offered to administrators in coping with the various legal problems of personnel management in chapter 7. The legal foundations of collective bargaining and the traditional processes are defined and discussed in chapter 8. Chapter 9 emphasizes risk management and program planning with the courts in mind. The book ends with a troubleshooting guide that provides an outline of critical legal problems and refers to pages in the book containing the solutions. (Contains 78 references.) (RT)
