Effective parental involvement extends itself beyond the classroom and into the home by providing academic support. Indeed, parents must be committed to strengthening the partnership between the home and Mississippi's schools. This curriculum guide, with a clear, easy-to-follow design, is intended as a resource guide to help parents understand the Mississippi Curriculum Frameworks for reading, language arts, and mathematics through eighth grade. The purpose of this guide is to provide parents with a description of what children are expected to know and be able to do in reading, language arts, and mathematics. In addition, the guide can and should be used in the home to extend what children are learning in school. The guide is organized by curriculum frameworks and grade level. It cites "benchmarks" consisting of what a child should be able to do by the end of the designated grade level, and items have been included for each benchmark from which the new Mississippi Grade Level Testing Program will be based upon. The guide is divided into the following sections: Mississippi Pre-Kindergarten Curriculum; K-3 Reading Instructional Intervention Supplement; K-3 Writing Instructional Intervention Supplement; 4-8 Reading Instructional Intervention Supplement; 4-8 Writing Instructional Intervention Supplement; English Language Learners Instructional Intervention Guide; and Mathematics Instructional Intervention Supplement.
