Writing is one of the most complex activities children engage in during their school careers. This book provides teachers with the knowledge and ideas they need to increase their effectiveness when instructing students in writing. The book blends together practical, easy-to-implement, classroom-tested lessons and activities based on research. It is divided into four sections: Section I includes a description of a classroom in which excellent writing thrives. It provides tips on: how to create positive writing experiences; the teacher's role and responsibilities; classroom set-up; and time management. Section II provides: an explanation of the different stages of the writing process; instructional strategies to support struggling learners; and an abundance of suggestions for creating and using supporting activities. Section III includes: information on the importance of journal writing; and ideas about reading and writing as transitional processes. Section IV presents the various problems some students may be experiencing when asked to write. Each scenario is accompanied by: student writing samples; an analysis of each sample; questions for the teacher to ask herself/himself about the classroom writing process; teaching strategies; and classroom modifications to assist those who struggle. The book includes a How-to-Use-This-Book section and task analysis icons for specific writing skills.
