Advocates in Action: Making a Difference for Young Children.
Robinson, Adele; Stark, Deborah R.
This guide offers advice on influencing public policy and educational practice to the benefit of young children and the early childhood community. Included is information on the types of advocacy; how to work with others; the basics of federal, state, and local policy; and tips on disseminating information. Following an introduction highlighting the importance of advocacy, the chapters are: (1) "The Different Kinds of Advocacy"; (2) "Building Capacity"; (3) "Knowing and Using the Legislative and Regulatory Processes"; (4) "Other Non-Legislative Opportunities for Making Public Policy"; (5) "The Advocate's Toolbox"; (6) "Getting Your Message Out"; and (7) "Nonprofit Organizations and Lobbying, Political Activity, and Voter Education." Profiles of advocacy work throughout the country highlight the accomplishments of motivated advocates. The guide concludes by asserting that advocacy efforts at every level are crucial in effecting positive change for children. Five appendices describe the structure of the federal and state governments and the role of the legislative branches, identify various legislative staff, present an excerpt from the Internal Revenue Tax Code related to tax exemptions, and list government and organizational resources for early childhood advocates.
