Changing Channels: Activities Promoting Media Smarts and Creative Problem Solving for Kids.

When children have healthy ways to process the news and information they see on television, they are better prepared to approach conflict peacefully and solve problems in their everyday lives. This guide presents activities for children to help them learn to think critically about what they see on television, to resolve conflicts productively, and to develop healthy self-esteem. Each of the three sections contains a short introduction to the subject as it affects young children, songs and activities including sheet music and lyrics, and activities to explore the topic of each song with 3- to 8-year-olds and expand upon the song throughout the day. Each activity includes a list of materials needed, directions, discussion ideas for talking with children, and activity variations for children with disabilities. The chapters are: (1) "Turn it off, Change the Channel, Leave the Room!"; (2) "Dad Threw the TV out the Window: 50 Things That I Can Do Instead of Watch TV"; (3) "Buy Me This and Buy Me That"; (4) "The TV Way"; (5) ""Count to Ten and Try Again"; (6) "Use a Word"; (7) "Talk to Me"; (8) "Sharing"; (9) "A Ballet Dancing Truck Driver"; (10) "That's What I Like about You"; and (11) "The Power in Me." The guide and a compact disc on which it is based, aim to help children process television and media influences in a positive way, emphasizing creative conflict resolution, managing television time and creative time, and understanding the differences between TV and video super heroes and real life.
