Los Angeles Community College District Fall 1996 Student Survey.
Prather, George; Kelly, Dexter
This report presents the results of the 1996 Los Angeles Community College District Student Survey. The survey was administered in a randomly selected group of classes. Each college sample is independent of the others and the proportion of students sampled within each college will vary. Responses were weighted inversely to account for disproportionate representation of full-time students in the raw sample. The response rate for all colleges was 74%. Findings included: (1) 44% of students were 24 years old or younger; (2) 17% of respondents were Asian, 16% African American, 42% Hispanic, and 23% white; (3) 42% of respondents were very interested in computers as an area of study, 24% were very interested in fine arts, music, and theatre, and 15% were interested in trades and applied technology; (4) 56% of respondents said it was very important to them to prepare for transfer to a four-year college, while 46% said it was very important for them to prepare for a job change or achievement in the same career; and (5) 66% of respondents said that the low cost of education at the college they were enrolled in was a very important factor in choosing that college.
