This issue is intended to help trustees understand how their boards can monitor the complex responsibilities of today's faculty and encourage work arrangements that best tap faculty expertise, improve the professoriate's professional development, and advance the institution's academic mission. Trustees must consider the modern academic landscape, and the first step is to gain a better understanding of the actual responsibilities of faculty today. In addition to responsibilities for teaching, faculty also have responsibilities for research and service. Among the important vital issues trustees and faculty alike must confront are the importance of university context, issues of faculty workload and recognition, the nature of academic inquiry itself, and the issues related to part-time faculty. Trustees must ensure that the institutions they steward identify essential faculty responsibilities and activities, articulate clear expectations, provide faculty development activities, assess progress toward goals, and recognize and reward contributions made by faculty members.
