Benchmarking Public Education in Worcester.

This report examines the performance of the Worcester Public Schools, Massachusetts, highlighting the areas in which Worcester is succeeding and where it needs improvement. Indicators presented in the report were developed in collaboration with representatives of a wide variety of organizations, as well as public officials. The report provides some comparisons to similar school districts in Massachusetts, including Springfield, Lowell, and Fall River. Although the report presents aggregate district-level data, a data appendix with individual data for individual schools in Worcester is available at the end of the report. The report begins by describing what performance measures are and how they should be used. Next it focuses on the six indicators: attendance and dropout rates; student mobility; family involvement; post-graduate placement; local employer satisfaction; and Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) scores. For each indicator, the report discusses why it is important, how Worcester performs, and what it means for Worcester. After offering detailed district profiles for the four cities, a data appendix presents detailed charts on each of the six indicators. (SM)
