Neal-Schuman Guide to Recommended Children's Books and Media for Use with Every Elementary Subject.
Matthew, Kathryn I.; Lowe, Joy L.
This resource guide is intended to help teachers and librarians integrate the best of a broad range of children's literature into the excitement of everyday learning. The guide contains annotations for contemporary children's books, videos, CD-ROMs and related media, as well as presenting inventive ideas for exploring them. An introduction provides information on meeting the needs of individual students, making personal connections, extending learning, and responding to literature through writing, discussing, questioning, and exploring. Also included is information on selecting materials and general suggestions for using children's literature routinely as learning resources. Eight major subject areas are: each chapter: mathematics, science, language arts, social studies, physical education, health, art, and music. Each chapter begins with a brief overview of the concepts included in the curricular area, and the current subject area content standards for each are assembled. The eight chapters are subdivided into subtopics and include by book and media annotations and suggested ideas for exploring the texts. The annotations are arranged by grade level and are followed by suggested explorations for related books and media and general ideas for using other materials on the same topic. The chapters conclude with lists of teacher resources including books, professional organizations, and Internet sites. The appendix contains a comprehensive listing of teacher and librarian resources including journals, professional organizations, and Internet sites as well as media sources such as videotapes, audio books, and software. (Contains subject and full title/author indexes.) (AEF)
