Clear Speech from the Start: Basic Pronunciation and Listening Comprehension in North American English. Student's Book.
Gilbert, Judy B.
This book is designed to give beginning students immediate help with English pronunciation. The book concentrates on topics, such as rhythm, intonation, and sounds as grammar cues, that will make the biggest difference in students' ability to understand and communicate with others. With its graphics-based approach, the book makes it possible to teach beginning students the essentials of English pronunciation without relying on verbal explanations. The book has the following key features: it uses simple vocabulary, short sentences, and visual cues that make the material accessible to beginners; it employs a new way of representing vowels that makes their pronunciation easy to learn; it uses visual representations of important concepts, such as vowel length and intonation; it illustrates with unique photos of lifelike models of the inside of the mouth; it contains "Music of English" boxes that teach students the fundamentals of English rhythm and intonation, using phrases that are especially useful for beginners; and it relies on the recycling of concepts throughout the course to build students' knowledge and confidence. The book can be used as a classroom text, for laboratory use, and for self study. (NKA)
