The New Guide to Writing Research Papers.
Callan, Stasia J.; Penwarden, Ann P.; Wendell, Carolyn
The research paper teaches college students how to use basic research skills that are needed for gathering information and writing papers in a variety of courses as well as methods used for lifelong learning, both on and off the job. The last decade of technological development has resulted in new choices in resources for research, particularly electronic databases and Web-based information. These changes have prompted the need to update this Guide (the original was published in 1986), which is designed for writers and researchers (including college students) who are using either print or electronic resources and need to document those resources. The guidelines and recommendations of major authorities in research have been integrated in this updated Guide. The Guide is divided into the following parts: (1) Introduction to Writing Research Papers; (2) Writing the Text of the Research Paper; (3) Resources for Research; (4) Evaluation and Selection of Resources; (5) Giving Credit to Avoid Plagiarism; (6) Documenting a Paper: When and How; (7) Evaluation Checklist for Final Copy; (8) American Psychological Association (APA) Style; (9) Council of Biology Editors (CBE) Style; and (10) Modern Language Association (MLA) Style. (Contains 28 references. An appendix describes 2 kinds of abstracts and annotated bibliographies, and presents an example of an annotation.) (NKA)
