Graduate Satisfaction and Entry-Level Training in Office Skills.

This report investigates the relationship between graduate satisfaction and graduate characteristics, courses, course outcomes, and provider. It uses results from the 1997 technical and further education (TAFE) Graduate Destination Survey (GDS) of 60,746 students who completed a course at a TAFE institute in 1996 and staff interviews. A glossary precedes Chapter 1, which focuses on performance indicators. Chapter 2 discusses GDS measures associated with graduate satisfaction with courses and employment outcomes. Chapter 3 addresses measures of course satisfaction and examines whether graduates' ratings of courses are influenced by outcomes. Chapter 4 compares satisfaction of graduates of entry-level training courses in office skills from different TAFE institutes. Differences between satisfaction levels in different fields of study and different levels of qualification suggest comparisons of similar courses between institutes are more appropriate than comparisons of dissimilar courses within institutes. Chapter 5 presents results of interviews with staff teaching nine entry-level courses in office skills four with the highest mean satisfaction scores and five with the lowest; describes course location and content; and presents common themes staffing, assessment, recognition of prior learning, and practice firms. Chapter 6 presents conclusions. Appendixes include 10 references and description of analyses. (YLB)
