Secondary Education in Slovenia. A Secondary Education for Europe Series.
This monograph contains a brief description of secondary education in Slovenia. Slovenia, one of the youngest European states, recognized by the international community in 1992, is one of the smallest European countries. This report was prepared on the basis of available documents, statistical data, and research reports as well as existing proposals for conceptual changes. Although the process of gradual improvement of the educational system in Slovenia started a few years ago, the final state of these changes has not yet been decided upon. At present, it seems certain that any change that might occur in the coming year will not be an abrupt transformation, but rather an evolution of the present system (unlike the practice of reforms of the entire educational system, characteristics of the past). Secondary education in Slovenia has been defined as the four or five years following the eight years of compulsory primary education, but for this report the term "upper" primary education for grades five to eight will be used where relevant. Chapters include: (1) "Societal, Historical and Political Background"; (2) "General Section"; (3) "The Efficiency and Performance of Secondary Education"; (4) "Challenges, Problems and Prospects"; and (5) "References and Further Reading."
