This collection of essays is intended to spark thoughtful discussion about future directions for developmental education. The essays grew out of a conversation among 21 local, regional, and national leaders in the field of developmental education at the "First Intentional Meeting on Future Directions in Developmental Education," held in October, 1999, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Participants submitted written comments regarding current issues. These comments were used to shape the meeting's 16 session themes. Those themes, presented in this paper, are: (1) "Historical Perspectives"; (2) "Defining Developmental Education as a Profession"; (3) "Theoretical Frameworks that Span the Disciplines"; (4) "Research in Developmental Education"; (5) "Pedagogical Issues and New Directions"; (6) "Innovation and Expansion in the Breadth of Programs and Services"; (7) "Technology and the 'Knowledge Age'"; (8) "High School to College Matriculation"; (9) "Enhancing Student Access and Retention"" (10) "Collaboration and Partnerships"; (11) "Predicting Success"; (12) "Assessment and Outcomes"; (13) "Institutional Fit: Mission and Structure of Programs Within Different Types of Institutions"; (14) "Costs and Economic Impact of Developmental Education"; (15) "Enhancing Credibility, Gaining Recognition"; and (16) "Standards: Implications for Training, Professional Development, and Education."
