Student Outcomes Survey: In Summary. Statistics 2001.

A national survey of students who undertook vocational education and training (VET) in the year 2000 at a Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institute in Australia was conducted through a mailing of questionnaires to a randomly selected sample of graduates and module completers. Response rate was 52 percent and 41 percent, respectively. In addition, a telephone survey of non-responders was conducted. The sample was stratified by TAFE institute, field of study, gender, and age. Results of the study include the following: (1) 88 percent of TAFE graduates and 67 percent of module completers were employed or in further study; (2) 74 percent of graduates and 64 percent of module completers undertook their TAFE training for vocational or work-related reasons; (3) 27 percent of graduates and 19 percent of module completers were employed in their first full-time job during May of 2001; (4) more than half of the graduates and module completers rated the quality of their TAFE training as 8 or more on a 10-point scale; (5) 45 percent of graduates and 35 percent of module completers who were unemployed before their training found work after their training; (6) 25 percent of graduates and 13 percent of module completers who were employed before and after their training moved to a higher skilled occupation after their training; and (7) 26 percent of graduates and 11 percent of module completers received pay increases as a result of their training.
