Pregnant with Meaning: Teen Mothers and the Politics of Inclusive Schooling. Adolescent Cultures, School & Society.
Kelly, Deirdre M.
This book addresses issues related to teen mothers and schooling, examining how teen mothers have become scapegoats for social anxieties, how schools respond to these stigmatized students, and what helps/hinders the success of schools attempting to form more inclusive settings for teen mothers. The book links an ethnographic study of two schools to the wider North American political and economic context. Ten chapters include: (1) "Introduction: Locating the Study in Historical and Political Context"; (2) "Pregnant with Meaning: Teen Mothers as Catch-All Enemies"; (3) "The Good Choices Discourse: A Fashionable, Flawed Attempt To Avoid Stigma"; (4) "Stigma Stories in the Media: Four Discourses about Teen Mothers, Welfare, and Poverty"; (5) "Integrating Teen Mothers into City and Town Schools: Coping with the Dilemma of Difference"; (6) "Therapeutic Haven versus Real-World Microcosm: How Citizenship Challenges the Dichotomy"; (7) "Inconceivable Conceptions: The Politics of Silence at Town School"; (8) "Warning Labels: Stigma and the Popularizing of the Stories of Teen Mothers"; (9) "Studying Up, Down, and Across in Schools: Speaking about, for, and with Teen Mothers: Dilemmas of a Critical Feminist Ethnographer"; and (10) "Teen Mothers and the Inclusive Model: Toward a Critical Feminist Stance." (Contains approximately 350 references.) (SM)
