There has been much discussion about the role and nature of counseling and guidance in the schools. Thus, this book aims to help teachers and others working in and with schools by exploring the development of counseling and guidance in one school situation. The text incorporates the comments of students, teachers, administrators, and parents regarding school guidance at Ramsey Abbey School in England; the concerns of these groups formed the basis for the research and development in the school. Chapter 1 opens with a general discussion of counseling and guidance in the schools and it summarizes the main themes of the book. Chapter 2 contains a case study of the process of developing policy and practice in Ramsey Abbey School and includes a range of development activities that explore different parts of the process. Summaries of the interviews carried out in the case study are provided in chapter 3, with a focus on the opinions of students and teachers. Chapter 4 details the concerns expressed by students, teachers, administrators, and parents, as well as those issues related to development and research in schools. Some of these concerns include systems of referral, parents' rights, communication with students, legal policies, school rules, and official documentation. Includes a subject index and a name index.
