Maintaining Motivation and Regulating Emotion: Measuring Individual Differences in Academic Volitional Strategies.
McCann, Erin J.; Garcia, Teresa
An instrument was developed to measure the resourcefulness and self-directedness of students in maintaining their motivation on academic goal tasks. The Academic Volitional Strategy Inventory (AVSI) is a self-report instrument designed to assess the management of emotion and motivation by college students during the goal-striving process. An initial version was tested and revised, and the revised version was completed by 463 college students. Further revisions were tested with 246 college students. Analysis of these results suggested a three-factor structure with three distinct families of volitional strategies that were consistent with previous research done in this area. These psychometric assessments provide evidence for the usefulness of the AVSI in measuring self-regulatory actions related to maintaining effort and motivation on goal-directed activity.
