This study explores the complex interaction and individuality of students in a community college basic writing class. Students represented a diverse population in terms of age and ethnicity. The research makes use of informal and formal modes of writing in the classroom as a way to understand writing as both an individual activity and as a social process. There were two formal assignments administered on the topic of literacy: First, students described their personal histories with learning to read and write; second, students researched their community or family's attitudes toward reading and writing. Research reflects how writing in the classroom encouraged personal introspection and problem solving in a very immediate manner. Interpretation of the findings focuses on developing a more comprehensive understanding of the concepts of purpose, authority, and confidence, and aims to establish a better definition of writing. The study addresses: (1) how students remember and reflect on their personal histories with reading and writing; (2) the process experienced by teacher and students in writing classes serving diverse student populations; (3) how past and present experiences affect individuals' confidence; (4) how student writers perceive their writing processes, their readings, and their purpose; (5) the roles that gender and culture play in writing ability; and (6) what happens when a teacher works with students to encourage subjective awareness through writing.
