UNICEF Annual Report, 1999.
United Nations Children's Fund, New York, NY.
UNICEF is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for the protection of children's rights, to help meet their basic needs, and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. This report details the accomplishments and activities of UNICEF for the year 1998. The report begins with the mission statement and introductory remarks from the U.N. Secretary-General. The overview statement from the executive director notes the measures taken to continue the momentum to meet the goals for children from the 1990 World Summit for Children. The report then describes the work of UNICEF as guided by the view that only by realizing the rights of children and women can they achieve their full potential. The accomplishments of UNICEF in 1998 are detailed, including efforts to ensure that all children have a good start to life through immunization and other health programs, to support early childhood education and care programs, provide equal educational access for boys and girls, to assist children in crisis due to armed conflict and other crises, to protect children and adolescents from HIV/AIDS, and to reduce poverty through a sector-wide approach. A map details the areas in which UNICEF programs operate. The report next describes programs in partnership with industrialized countries and the corporate community and delineates international celebrity spokespersons. Information on UNICEF's resources and management is outlined, including income, government contributions, expenditures, the 1998-1999 budget, and efforts to improve and decentralize management and operations. The regular funds targeted for particular programs are listed by country. The report concludes with contact information for various UNICEF committees. (KB)
