This handbook provides guidance about controlling and directing an academic career by suggesting systematic approaches to key areas of responsibility and activity. The chapters of part 1, "The Turbulent Environment," are: (1) "The International Context for UK Higher Education" (Robin Middlehurst); (2) "The Impact of National Developments on Institutional Practice" (Rob Cuthbert); and (3) "The Student Experience" (Rob Shorrock). The second section, "Running the Business," includes: (4) "Strategic and Operational Planning" (Tom Kennie); (5) "The Ethical Manager: Working with and through Colleagues" (Anne Gold); and (6)"Managing the Human Resource Function" (Catherine Haines and Steve Ketteridge). Part 3, "Creating Intellectual Wealth," contains: (7) "Managing Postgraduate Research Degrees" (Stan Taylor); (8) "Managing High-Impact Research Groups" (Ewan Ferlie, Janet Harvey, and Andrew Pettigrew); and (9) "Developing a Strategic Culture for Research" (Ken Young). "At the Digital Chalk-Face," part 4, contains: (10) "Revitalizing and Renewing the Curriculum" (Heather Fry and Keith Trigwell); (11) "Learning from Quality Assessment" (George Gordon); (12) "Teaching for Diversity and Retention: The Example of Students with Disabilities" (Alan Hurst); and (13) "Harnessing Information Technology for Learning" (Su White and Hugh Davis). The final section, "The Harsh Reality," contains: (14) "Career-Long Competence: Unattainable Ideal or Professional Requirement?" (Gus Pennington and Brenda Smith); and (15) "Making Choices: Routes to Success" (Steve Ketteridge, Stephanie Marshall, and Heather Fry). Most of the chapters contain references. (SLD)
