College Performance of New Maryland High School Graduates: Student Outcome and Achievement Report.
Keller, Michael
This ninth annual Student Outcome and Achievement Report (SOAR) presents information about how well Maryland high school graduates have done in the initial year in college. The SOAR system collects information about the college performance of new high school graduates in Maryland, including remedial work needed in mathematics, English, and reading; grades in first mathematics and English courses; and cumulative grade point average. Data are drawn from the Scholastic Assessment Tests and the American College Testing program. This report looks at the college performance of students who graduated in the 1998-1999 school year who enrolled in the 1999-2000 academic year. All public 2-year and 4-year campuses in Maryland and 11 state-aided independent institutions participate in SOAR. The report contains four sections: (1) the college performance of students who did and did not complete the recommended core curriculum in high school; (2) factors affecting college performance; (3) trends in the college performance of high school graduates; and (4) the graduate rates of core and noncore students. (Contains 35 tables.) (SLD)
