Language Planning in Nepal, Taiwan and Sweden. Multilingual Matters.
Baldauf, Richard B., Jr., Ed.; Kaplan, Robert B., Ed.
This edited volume covers the language situation in Nepal, Taiwan, and Sweden, explaining the linguistic diversity, the place of minorities and their languages, the historical and political contexts, and the current language situation, including language-in-education planning, the role of the media, the role of religion, and the roles of non-indigenous languages, especially English. Two of the contributing authors in this volume (Tsao and Winsa) are indigenous and have been participants in the language planning context while the remaining author (Eagle) has done extensive fieldwork in Nepal. To date, Nepal, Taiwan, and Sweden have not featured prominently in the international language policy and planning literature. The purpose of the volume (and others in this series) is to present up-to-date information on policies that are not well-known to researchers in the field. The book has an introduction and three chapters: "The Language Situation in Nepal" (Sonia Eagle); "The Language Planning Situation in Taiwan" (Feng-fu Tsao); and "Language Planning in Sweden" (Birger Winsa). (Contains 316 references.) (KFT)
