Contemporary Composition Studies: A Guide to Theorists and Terms.
Babin, Edith; Harrison, Kimberly
This reference guide of composition studies defines key terms and concepts and provides information about scholars in the field. The guide is intended as an invitation into composition studies for newcomers who wish to explore and perhaps contribute to the discipline, for those in other disciplines who wish to familiarize themselves with the field of composition studies, and for seasoned writing teachers who wish to review the field, possibly making new connections between theory and practice. Taking the early 1960s as the beginning of composition studies, the guide introduces leading scholars and researchers, identifies their areas of interest and expertise, and briefly reviews their major contributions. It also includes summary entries for late 19th- and early 20th-century scholars and teachers whose work has influenced the discipline. It defines commonly used terms as they are understood by those in the field and, when appropriate, places them in the context of the field's development. The guide's Preface outlines the formats for the scholars' entries and for the term entries. An appendix provides brief entries introducing scholars from other fields who have contributed significantly to composition studies. (Contains an extensive list of works cited.) (NKA)
