Counselors Finding Their Way.
Kottler, Jeffrey A., Ed.
The essays in this book present personal narratives about individual counselors' life experiences that have helped shaped their professional development. The sections are organized around broad themes. Part 1, "Feeling Lost", looks at ways that counselors cope with feeling disoriented, confused, and filled with doubt. Parts 2-4, "Facing Pain and Adversity"; "Transitions and Transformations"; "Learning from Failure" all continue explorations of the difficult side of helping others for a living, and the personal costs that are paid by practitioners. Part 5, "Cultural Clashes," contains a series of essays specifically about experiences of oppression, racism, and prejudice. Part 6, "From around the World," presents essays from international counselors who speak about some of their difficult adjustments. In Part 7, "Clients as Teachers," the focus shifts on the ways that counselors have learned and grown as a result of their interactions with clients. Part 8, "Refining Our Thinking," continues this theme by addressing the ways that seminal moments have led to dramatic shifts in the ways counselors view their lives and work. Part 9, "Personal and Professional Lives," and Part 10, "Finding Your Own Truth," present stories about the ways that clinicians have struggled to find their own voice and develop their own unique counseling styles. Part 11, "Making a Difference," includes narratives about the incredible joys and benefits that counselors enjoy as a result of often challenging work. (JDM)
