Design, Development, and Pilot Testing of a Web-Based Counseling Support Site for a California Community College.
Brown-DiThomas, Deborah Sue
Two trends are currently emerging in California community colleges: (1) the rapid growth of the 'new majority' population of non-traditional, at-risk college students; and (2) the increase in distance education opportunities. These trends are forcing student services departments to discover different ways to meet the needs of students in the new technological environment. This study explored the use of Web-based counseling support services as a possible solution to this problem. The purpose of this study was to design, develop and pilot test a Web-based counseling support site at Riverside Community College (California), which included access to online counseling appointments. Through a collaborative process, counseling staff and online students contributed to the results. Analysis led to the following conclusions: (1) the counseling staff needs further staff development prior to full implementation of online counseling services; (2) the Internet provides a viable avenue for the delivery of student services; (3) the collaborative process demonstrated that involvement of all stakeholders in the development process is successful; (4) successful implementation of online student services necessitates established technical support; and (5) the constantly changing nature of the Internet requires ongoing evaluation of Web-based support services.
