This volume brings together the majority of lectures and papers presented at the 1998 and 1999 discourse symposia at Vaxjo University. Part one, "Four Perspectives on Discourse," offers a matrix perspective on narrative, a cross cultural perspective on academic rhetoric, a cognitive perspective on informational discourse, and a construction perspective on speech and writing. Part two, "Four Studies of Discourse Phenomena," offers a study on television teaching programs, the role of prosody in signaling topic shift in public speaking, sentence openings in English and Swedish texts, and the move structure of computer mediated genre.
