Classroom Language Skills for Children with Down Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Teachers. Topics in Down Syndrome.
This book presents ideas and techniques to help children with Down syndrome communicate better by mastering the language skills necessary for classroom success as well as those needed for social interaction. It also discusses the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process for speech-pathology services and what needs to be included in the IEP. Activities for use at home are provided as well as classroom activities. Worksheets and planning guides at the end of chapters and in the appendix can be used to help plan an individual child's program. The 12 chapters focus on the following topics: (1) an overview of language needs in schools; (2) the communication team; (3) evaluation and eligibility for speech-language services; (4) planning for a communication support program on a child's IEP; (5) helping children learn in inclusion; (6) the language of the curriculum; (7) the language of instruction; (8) the language of the hidden curriculum; (9) the language of educational testing (modifications and accommodations); (10) the language of classroom routines; (11) social interactive communication; and (12) augmentative and alternative means of communication.
