The Adaptive School: A Sourcebook for Developing Collaborative Groups.

This book is designed as a problem-based user's guide and sourcebook for practitioners who are developing and facilitating collaborative groups to improve student learning. It is organized by six themes that, taken together, focus and generate productive group results: getting work done, doing the work right, working collaboratively, managing systems, developing groups, and adapting to change. Each of 12 chapters addresses 1 or more of these themes with a set of practical tools and organizing principles. These ideas and tools show how means to improvement can be activated if they are dormant and focused if they are scattered. Appendix A lists naive questions; Appendices B and C are checklists for recording and assessing norms of collaborative inventory; Appendix D discusses the responsibilities dilemma of the teacher-facilitator person; Appendix E is a roadmap that can be used when contracting for facilitation services; Appendix F is a guideline for a facilitator's contracting conversation; Appendix G is a team-development survey/group inventory; Appendix H offers guidelines for structuring conversations about data; Appendix I is a list of items that may need to be addressed when engaging others in collecting and reporting data; and Appendix J lists five stages of change.
