Encouraging the Spiritual Development of Counseling Students and Supervisees Using Fowler's Stages of Faith Development.
Erwin, Terry McVannel
The impact of faith on individuals has been described in research for many years, yet counseling programs often do not address issues of spirituality. Little has been documented about how to integrate spirituality and religious issues into counseling programs and practices. In an attempt to address the need for more discussion on issues of spirituality, this paper outlines the basic premise of Fowler's Stages of Faith Development. It then applies these premises to counseling education and supervision, and suggests interventions that supervisors might use to encourage awareness and growth in faith development of their supervisees. The paper notes that research is needed to determine the validity of Fowler's stages and the effectiveness of using them to promote the faith development of counseling students.
