Mentoring Novice Teachers: Fostering a Dialogue Process.

This book provides educators who mentor novice teachers an opportunity to increase their awareness of the skills that are needed to mentor. Through the use of specific examples and role plays, teachers can learn how to work effectively with inexperienced teachers. The book helps mentors develop ways to interact positively with novice teachers and support beginning teachers as they move through initial teaching experiences. Throughout the book, readers are asked to dialogue with colleagues who are also mentors or involved in the mentoring relationship about their experiences and their understanding of the mentoring role. A pre-program questionnaire provides mentors with a snapshot of their knowledge as they begin reading the book. Mentors can use the results of the questionnaire to individualize the mentoring process to best meet their needs. After completing the book, mentors can use a follow-up questionnaire to identify growth. The book's six chapters are: (1) "Defining the Mentoring Relationship"; (2) "The Heart of Mentoring: Trust and Open Communication"; (3) "Addressing the Needs of the Mentee"; (4) "The Mentor's Lens"; (5) "Data-Gathering Techniques and Tools"; and (6) "Evaluation."
