Iram, Yaacov; Schmida, Mirjam
Although it has many features in common with other national educational systems in developed countries, the Israeli educational system has unique characteristics derived from both Jewish tradition and modern history, as well as from national revival over the last century. This book aims to provide an analytical review of the Israeli educational system as a whole from the preschool stage through higher education, and it addresses special educational issues such as reforms, changes, multiculturalism, vocationalism, and equity. Chapters in the book are: (1) "History, Geography, Demography, Economy, and Government"; (2) "Preprimary and Primary Education"; (3) "Postprimary Education"; (4) "Vocationalism"; (5) "Higher Education"; (6) "Informal Education"; (7) "Arab Education: Development versus Control" (Majid Al-Haj); (8) "Educational Reforms and Changes"; (9) "Multicultural Education"; and (10) "Major Trends and Future Developments." Contains a glossary, an annotated bibliography, and name and subject indexes. (BT)
