This report presents a public workshop by the Committee on Scientific Principles in Education Research, which was held on March 7-8, 2001. The committee was organized into three main sessions: (1) "Supporting Scientific Quality at the Federal Level: Consistency and Variation," which defines scientific quality and how it is supported by research organizations; (2) "The Interface of Research and Practice in Education: Linking Quality and Utility," which focuses on the scientific underpinnings of education research and the use of research in practice; and (3) "Evidence and Inference: Consistency and Variation Revisited," which focuses on the similarities and differences of concepts, evidence, and inference across disciplines. Appendices include the workshop agenda, workshop speaker biosketches, and workshop participants. (YDS)
