Based on the view that a simple and efficient process of portfolio collection could be developed based on authentically documenting the daily experiences of children in away-from-home settings, this book identifies steps in the processes of portfolio planning, collection, and selection, and conferencing with families. The book is intended for early childhood educators of infants, toddlers, and preschoolers in child care centers, Head Start programs, nursery schools, and family child care. The book presents the Focused Portfolio system and shows teachers how to compile a simple but comprehensive portfolio to capture children's learning, document observations, and relate the child's development to recognized milestones. Following the introduction, which presents a rationale for using the process and describes its fieldtest, the book's chapters are: (1) "The Focused Portfolios Process"; (2) "Documenting Favorites, Friends, Family, and Developmental Milestones"; (3) "A Basic Portfolio: Linsey"; (4) "The Documentation Process"; (5) "More on How To Fit Documentation into Your Busy Day"; (6) "Ideas for Experienced Users and a More Complex Portfolio: Sierra"; (7) "Using Observations To Plan Individualized Curriculum"; (8) "Reflecting and Preparing for Family Conferences"; (9) "Effective Conferencing with Families in the First Collection"; and (10) "The Second Collection and Conference." The book's five appendices include portfolio forms in English and Spanish, sample forms using criteria from other assessment systems, and information on quantifying and aggregating data from the focused portfolios process.
