This booklet provides an overview of higher education in the United Kingdom. Higher education in the United Kingdom is rich and diverse, provided by many different types of organizations carrying out teaching, scholarship, and research. There are more than 1.8 million students in higher education in the United Kingdom, and 88% are from the United Kingdom, with another 5.5% from the European community. The majority of the 166 universities and colleges in the United Kingdom are in England. United Kingdom higher education funding bodies provide 5.1 billion British pounds for higher education, and an additional 5.1 billion British pounds comes from nongovernment funding. Other government agencies provide 2.6 billion British pounds for higher education.
