This document presents statistical data of direct federal science and engineering support to higher education institutions in the United States. Data presented in the report are collected annually and exclude financial support of an indirect nature. There are six categories of support presented: (1) "Research and Development"; (2) "Research and Development Plant"; (3) "Facilities and Equipment for Instruction in Science and Engineering"; (4) "Fellowships, Traineeships, and Training Grants"; (5) "General Support for Science and Engineering"; and (6) "Other Science and Engineering Activities." The Table of Contents includes technical notes on the scope of the survey, categories of support, and types of institutions as well as detailed statistical tables on federal science and engineering obligations.
