Newman, Rita, Ed.; Hearron, Patricia, Ed.
Focus on Pre-K & K, v12 n1-4 Fall 1999-Sum 2000
These four quarterly newsletter issues address various topics of interest to teachers of young children. Each issue features articles on a specific theme, along with regular columns. The Fall 1999 issue focuses on curricula that emphasize the value of authentic learning and describes a project on community helpers as it evolved in a kindergarten classroom. A second article explains how teachers can shape school to fit the individual child by combining selected picture books with meaningful activities. The Winter 1999 issue focuses on using computers in kindergarten, suggesting that computer applications are best viewed as languages. A second article focuses on computers as tools for enhancing academic skills. The executive board vice president's column discusses international cooperation among early childhood practitioners. The Spring 2000 issue focuses on applying research findings in the classroom. One article demonstrates how a play-based K-1 multiage classroom met rigorous state standards. A second article discusses how 4- and 5-year-olds can respond to and learn from art and art history. The Summer 2000 issue addresses the implications of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse of young children. The first article provides a definition of child abuse, offers guidance for educators, and discusses educational implications. The vice president's column presents information on educational systems in Finland and New Zealand. (KB)
