Implementing the Middle School Concept (Middle School 101). Staff Development Kit #1.

This staff development kit contains materials and suggestions to help a faculty in its early efforts to implement the middle school concept. It is equally applicable in schools already organized as middle schools but not yet true middle schools in terms of program and/or procedures and in schools making the transition from the junior high school model to that of the advocated middle level school. It is primarily focused on the initiation or orientation phase. The five sections are: (1) "Initiating the Study" (questions to consider in planning the transition, change, and resistance to change); (2) "The Nature of Young Adolescents" (quiz on young adolescents and articles on early adolescence); (3) "The Middle School Concept" (characteristics of developmentally responsive middle level schools and articles and research summaries on middle school); (4) "Curriculum and Instruction" (research summaries on curriculum and instruction, characteristics of a real middle level school, and a position statement by the National Middle School Association on academic achievement); and (5) "Appendices" (four appendices offer a glossary of terms, lists of resources, and keys to quizzes presented in the kit).
