Advice from the Dean: A Personal Perspective on the Philosophy, Roles, and Approaches of a Dean at a Small, Private, Liberal Arts College. NASPA Monograph Series.
Tederman, James S.
This monograph is written for deans of students of small, private, liberal arts colleges, for those who aspire to the position, as well as for college administrators who need to understand the demands of student affairs programs. It addresses the role and function of liberal arts college student affairs administrators and the unique challenges and problems faced by deans of students. It is not intended as a scholarly review of current practice in the field but gives a personal account by someone who has many years in the role of dean of students at small liberal arts colleges. It is intended as a practical handbook and is organized in terms of the major areas deans will supervise and the major challenges they will face. The student affairs practice in liberal arts colleges is highly diverse and reflective of the diversity found on campuses. Part I attempts to address the role of deans in the context of the diverse nature of the campus. Part II explains both the offices and programs the dean of students normally supervises. Part III considers several organizational issues affecting the dean of students, including the dean's place in the organizational hierarchy. (Contains 11 references.) (JDM)
