Aylesbury Revisited: Outreach in the 1980s.
National Inst. of Adult Continuing Education, Leicester (England).
This document is a republication of the Aylesbury Report, first published and distributed almost secretly in 1981 as the result of an action research project in a large housing project (the Aylesbury Estate) in southeast London. The project offered employees of a local education authority the opportunity to question, criticize, and experiment with some of its policies and practices in delivering adult education, in an attempt to change its way of doing things. The foreword, by one of the original authors, presents an opportunity for reflection at a time of change in the management of adult education policy. The project's design and methodology (visits and interviews) are described. Recommendations are listed, guidelines for project evaluation are stated, and what has happened since the project is described. Also covered are the following: a history of Inner London Education Authority outreach, a proposal for establishing an advisory unit for community education, theoretical models of community education, the unease of the outreach worker, workers' fears of violence, and notes on a visit to Denmark by the project team. Appendixes include a list of project participants, a calendar of events, selections from the outreach workers' daily diaries, an area profile, and census returns. (KC)
