Social Studies Excursions, K-3. Book One: Powerful Units on Food, Clothing, and Shelter.
Alleman, Janet; Brophy, Jere
The first in a 3-volume series, this book presents instructional units on cultural universals for primary grade social studies. This volume focuses on food, clothing, and shelter, and includes information about how and why it was developed and suggestions about planning and implementing the units. Its content is elementary and familiar in that it addresses fundamental aspects of the human condition and connects with experience-based tacit knowledge that students already possess. Students will learn about cultural universals that may be unfamiliar, discover new information, develop connections to help transform scattered items of knowledge into a network of integrated knowledge, and apply this knowledge to their lives outside of school. It features 16 lessons about "Food," 10 about "Clothing," and 12 about "Shelter." Lessons include plans for learning activities, assessment tasks, and follow-up home assignments. (Contains 34 reproducibles.) (BT)
