Ruggieri-Vande Putte, Katherine
Intended for use in grades 2-6, this workbook uses an interactive simulation that teaches community cooperation skills. The unit is designed so that jobs, responsibilities, and requirements can be added or modified to provide a comfortable fit for every classroom. Students define their local community, identify local community workers, understand the roles of specific community workers, participate in creating a classroom community, develop an understanding of community interactions, make decisions through democratic processes, develop an understanding of business interactions, apply for a job, earn a weekly wage and budget for personal expenses, experience the responsibilities of employment, utilize business facilities, maintain land and home, and experience benefits and responsibilities of community life. The workbook is divided into two parts: "Part 1: Preparing for Our Town" ("Introduction to 'Our Town'"; "Scheduling the Unit"; "Teacher Tips for Using the Materials"; and "Activities and Extensions") and "Part 2: Implementing Our Town" ("Reproducible Forms and Activity Work Sheets"; "Reproducible Money and Related Financial Forms"; "Reproducible Cards for Activities"; "Reproducible Job Information Sheets"; "Reproducible Employment Ads"; and "Rules To Post").
