Head Start of North Dakota, 1999-2000.

The Head Start program, a comprehensive child development program designed to increase the social competence of children in low-income families and children with disabilities and to improve their chances of school success, has been in North Dakota since 1965. This report describes the objectives of the Head Start and Early Head Start programs, the North Dakota Head Start Association, and the Collaboration Office; presents information on the administration of Head Start in North Dakota; and describes program options in the state. The report delineates current eligibility criteria and program services. A map details the location of North Dakota Head Start and Early Head Start grantees. Included throughout the report are parent comments about the benefits of the Head Start and Early Head Start programs. Parent and staff training opportunities are also described. The report concludes with 1-page profiles of the 14 Head Start and 5 Early Head Start programs. Each profile includes the following information in addition to contact information: (1) grantee name; (2) number of staff; (3) number of child development staff; (4) number of child development staff with degrees; (5) number of volunteers; (6) number of classrooms; (7) counties served; (8) enrollment, both ACYF-funded and total; (9) program options; (10) racial/ethnic background of children served; (11) number and location of centers; (12) medical services received; (13) head of household employment status; (14) number of families served; (15) families' income levels; and (16) family characteristics.
