This book presents strategies for teaching the personal narrative, feature article, how-to article, and persuasive letter, and for teaching fiction and reflective thinking and writing. It includes definitions, lesson plans, originals for transparencies and photocopies, and sample student writing. The first four sections are: Teaching the Personal Narrative; Teaching the Feature Article; Teaching the How-to Article; and Teaching the Persuasive Letter. The fifth section (Teaching Fiction) contains 24 lessons divided into nine parts: (1) Story Elements; (2) Common Story Subjects; (3) Developing Fiction Through Characters; (4) Developing Fiction Through Setting; (5) Developing Fiction Through Plot; (6) Developing Fiction Through Leads and Closings; (7) Transitions; (8) Writing the Story; and (9) Polishing for Publication. The sixth section (Teaching Reflective Thinking/Writing) includes 6 lessons. The seventh section contains the essay "Spelling: No Instant Recipes." (Contains 76 references.
