Land of Plenty: Diversity as America's Competitive Edge in Science, Engineering and Technology.
Warnings are coming from business leaders on a critical labor shortage, especially in information technology; however, representation of women, minority groups, and persons with disabilities in the U.S. science, engineering, and technology (SET) workforce could be improved. Preparing the nation for the evolving nature of work is important as well as providing an adequate number of SET workers. This document presents the recommendations of the Commission on the Advancement of Women and Minorities in Science, Engineering and Technology Development which are based on examinations of the barriers that exist for underrepresented minority groups, people with disabilities, and women in different levels of the SET pipeline. The recommendations focus on these points: (1) Precollege Education; (2) Access to Higher Education; (3) Professional Life; (4) Public Image; and (5) Nationwide Accountability.
