What Young Children Need To Succeed: Working Together To Build Assets from Birth to Age 11.
Roehlkepartain, Jolene L.; Leffert, Nancy
Providing children developmental assets such as family support, a caring neighborhood, positive values, and social skills will help them to grow up healthy, well-adjusted, and strong. This book spells out more than 1,000 practical, creative ways to build 40 key assets in children from birth to 11 years. The book describes developmental assets as grouped into eight categories: (1) support, including positive family communication and a caring neighborhood; (2) empowerment, including service to others and safety; (3) boundaries and expectations, including family boundaries, adult role models, and appropriate expectations for growth; (4) constructive use of time, including creative activities and religious community; (5) commitment to learning, including stimulating activity and homework, and reading for pleasure; (6) positive values, including caring, integrity, and responsibility; (7) social competencies, including planning and decision making, and resistance skills; and (8) positive identity, including personal power and sense of purpose. Each asset is discussed in a chapter, beginning with a general definition, followed by specific definitions for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary-age children. Activity suggestions are provided for parents, child care providers, educators, health-care professionals, congregational leaders, employers, librarians, community leaders, and children themselves. The book concludes with a 51-item annotated bibliography. (KB)
