Arts Education: Mutual Influences of Learning To Know and Learning To Do.
Wydenes, Jacob Oostwoud
This paper seeks to bridge two United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) themes in education: learning to know and learning to do. The paper discusses the place of each theme in art education, interpretting "learning to know" as art's reflective component and "learning to do" as art's productive component. It provides a short history of productive and reflective art education in the Netherlands and furnishes a comparison of concepts in the Netherlands. Through a theory and practice notion, the paper constructs a new classification for arts education. (Contains 3 figures and 15 references.) (BT)
