Videotape Highlights from Before It's Too Late: A Report to the Nation from the National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century. [Videotape].
Department of Education, Washington, DC.
This 9-minute videotape highlights "Before It's Too Late," the centerpiece report of the National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching for the 21st Century. The Commission was charged with creating a plan to improve the quality of mathematics and science instruction in K-12 classrooms nationwide. The report, released in September 2000, emphasizes that good teaching is the key to improved student achievement and recommends focusing on improving the knowledge and skills of current science and mathematics teachers, increasing the number of well-prepared teachers coming into the profession, and improving the working environment to make the profession more attractive. Each educational stakeholder--parents, school board members, superintendents, teachers, business leaders, and higher education administrators--has a unique role to play in bringing these recommendations to fruition. This video cites immediate and long-term steps that stakeholders should take in support of high quality mathematics and science teaching. (ASK)
