This report provides an overview of the scientific missions, research and research training funding trends, strategic planning initiatives, and research highlights for each Child Development and Behavior Branch (CDBB) research program for the years 1995-1999. CDBB develops scientific initiatives and supports research and research training relevant to the psychological, psychobiological, and educational development of children from conception through adolescence. A central theme flowing through all of the Branch scientific program areas is that physical and behavioral development are most adequately and accurately described as variable processes in which individual differences in cognitive, social, affective, language, and neurobiological maturation, environment and life experiences, and genetics interact in complex ways to influence child development. The five scientific research program areas are described, which include: (1) the Program in Cognitive, Social, and Affective Development; (2) the Program in Developmental Psychobiology and Cognitive Neuroscience; (3) the Program in Behavioral Pediatrics and Health Promotion; (4) the Program in Human Learning and Learning Disabilities; and (5) the Program in Language, Bilingualism, and Biliteracy Development and Disorders. Appendices include a list of major conferences and workshops conducted during the past five years and requests for applications and program announcements published by the Branch.
