Preventing School Violence: Resource Guide to Safe Schools.
Aspen Education Development Group, Gaithersburg, MD.
This guide surveys numerous violence-prevention and -management issues--from recognizing warning signs for preventing violence to developing crisis-management steps for addressing those incidents that cannot be prevented. The guide focuses on school-safety strategies in the form of policies and procedures, planning, prevention, intervention, security, crisis management, community partnerships, legal issues, and related resources. Chapter 1 discusses early-warning signs of violence, whereas chapter 2 examines safe-school strategies, which include ways to manage disruptive students. Chapter 3 shares information on security-related strategies for improving school safety, and chapter 4 focuses on how to integrate nonviolence into the school curriculum, including ways to handle bullying, harassment, and intimidation. Chapter 5 discusses school-safety policies and procedures and emphasizes firm, fair, and consistent enforcement of legally- and operationally-sound policies. The next chapter explores crisis management, detailing what steps to take when violence erupts in spite of the best prevention efforts. Legal issues associated with school safety are presented in chapter 7, which includes legal case studies associated with school-safety issues. Chapter 8 provides an Internet guide to sites on safe-school issues, and the last chapter identifies useful foundations and grant programs. An appendix lists titles of books, journals, catalogs, and other resource information. (RJM)
